Everything You Need To Know About Traveling Now

Well, travel is finally starting to open up and the world is beginning to look a teensy bit more normal. I, for one, cannot wait to get on a plane to Jamaica in July (the good lord willing and the creek don't rise).  It will feel good to travel again!

Considering that business has been picking up nicely in the last few weeks, I think a lot of you share this sentiment.  I have noticed, however, that there are a lot of questions surrounding traveling now, which is understandable since things change by the minute.  In light of this, I've put together a quick FAQ to help you navigate the current world of travel whether you are planning a full-on family vacation or just want to finally see Grandma again.

Travel FAQ

Are Americans able to travel out of the country for leisure?  Yes, right now you can travel out of the country for any reason.

What is open now? Most of the Caribbean, much of Europe and most theme parks are either open now or opening shortly.  Keep in mind that not all resorts and hotel are open and there may be changes to the usual experience.  Cruise lines are still not sailing and the resumption of operations is still to be determined.

Will I need a COVID19 test before traveling?  You do not need a COVID19 test to travel within the U.S.  If you are traveling internationally, each country has its own requirements surrounding this. Some require a test, some test on arrival, and some don't require any testing. I keep an updated file for each country's current requirements.

Do I need to quarantine upon arrival?  Again, this varies by destination.  Currently, in the U.S., Hawaii is the only state requiring an arrival quarantine. Internationally, it varies by country (again, I've got a list).  Most destinations are not requiring an arrival quarantine at this time.

Will I have to quarantine when I get home?  Other than Hawaii, no states have an arrival quarantine at this moment.  However, some employers are requiring a self-quarantine upon your return.  You will want to check on this before planning your trip.

Are airlines offering refunds if I have to change or cancel my vacation?  Airlines are only required to refund your ticket if they cancel or significantly change your flight. and they are sticking by this rule.  Most airlines, however, are allowing you to change your flights without imposing change fees.

Can I cancel my trip without penalty if I'm uncomfortable traveling?  The best answer to this question is, "It depends."  Fear of the virus is not usually cause for a resort or hotel to abandon its normal cancellation policies.  Many destinations (not all), however, are relaxing some of their rules and will allow you to change your trip without incurring a penalty.  A few destinations are offering fully refundable options. There are even a few options where you can purchase your trip now at a steep discount and choose your travel dates later (more on this below).
